眼の前のニンジン

買った。どどーんと来た。今話題の書籍から汚れてしまって買い直したものまで。でもしばらくこのラップは開けられそうに無い。開けたら最後、やらなければならないことができなくなる。もう二週間もこの状態。

海外のサイトから買うことも多いが、なんだかんだ言ってもアマゾンが手軽だし、シッピングの不安も少ないので利用することが多い。在庫のあるうちに買わないとすぐに無くなって、再版まで時間がかかるものもあるので、手に入るうちに購入するようにしている。最近の為替の影響で、買ったときから既に計2000円ほど価格が下がっているのを見て凹んでしまうということもありますが…。

ここ数日、日本でも文字に関する書籍が相次いで出版されていて、気になっているものがたくさんある。書籍のコーナーも設けたいなと思ってちょこちょことまとめてるがなかなかカタチにならず。このニンジンたちも視界の隅に置きつつもう少し我慢。

    Oh! I can’t read japanese but I have that Noordij’s book too!
    BTW, when are you going to release Axis?

    Thanks for your comment. Yeah, I’ve got Noordzij’s “The Stroke” few weeks ago.
    In fact, I’d already got it few years ago, but I bought it again for an archive because the previous book got some large ink spots when I practiced calligraphy to learn type design.
    I also checked your blog. I’m sure you also enjoyed this book, right?

    AXIS fonts were already released from http://www.axisfont.com. I’m afraid that the site is only Japanese. Did you read this article? Or, are you saying about Axis Latin family? Axis Latin family will out soon but I don’t know the detail. If you want to know the detail now, please ask Type Project, which is the foundry of AXIS fonts, or axisfont.com. You can ask about it in English.
    I’ll also introduce the info on AXIS Latin when these fonts are out, so I hope you check my blog post.

    I see, I just read your post about Axis release, it is very interesting, and big companies are using it, congrats! Designing a japanese typeface must be a really hard work, how many glyphs did you have to design? About 8000?
    I also saw some of you work here I think is refined and has strong calligraphic influence.

    Generally, Japanese fonts need to have at least 6500 Kanjis. AXIS Fonts have Adobe-Japan1-3 characters, so these fonts have about 7000 Kanji characters each.
    There are some Japanese fonts have Adobe-Japan1-4 characters, which have about 9000 kanjis.
    I have to say that Axis is not my design. Isao Suzuki is a designer of Axis fonts and a founder of Type Project. He designed all kanji characters by himself. It took about three years to finish it.
    He asked Akira Kobayashi, is type director of Linotype now, to make Latin part for AXIS Basic in 1999. I just joined a project to make width family AXIS Condensed and Compressed as a designer for Latin part few years ago. I should have mentioned it on that article.

    The work you watched on YouTube was in progress now. I’d learned calligraphy in MG school, where is remarkable Calligraphy school in Japan I think.
    As I’m also a package designer, I want to have a typeface goes with tea, wine, chocolate or sweets packages. I’ll show it on my blog when the font will out. I don’t know when I will finish to make it, though. :-)

    Ah! I’ve never notice my mistake of the article on AXIS in English page. The correct number is around 7000, not 8000. I revised it. Thanks, Elí!

    Maybe you know Ale Paul’s work, he specializes in fonts for package design, his work is terrific!
